Battery capacity

The capacity of the battery dictates how much load the battery can bear and how much energy the battery can store.

It can be expressed as amp-hours(Ah). For example, a battery of 100 Ah inflicts 5 amps for 20 hours. The industry-standard battery rate is 20 hours.

Battery capacity also expresses as RC(Reserve Capacity) in minutes.

Understanding battery voltage and configuration

Voltage is measured in “V” or volts.

Current is measured in “A” or amps.

 

You can understand the battery configuration by voltage and current. Voltage also seems to the horsepower of any vehicle. It indicates the power that a battery can exert. So, we can say that a 36V battery is less powerful than a 48V battery. Your electric cart can bear 3,6, 0r 12 V batteries. The electrical drive system contains 36V or 48V.

On the other hand, amps express the actual runtime of the vehicle. It determines the distance of travel, how long the time of traveling, and the time of charging. If you interest in leisure and extended drive, then you should focus on the battery amperage.

How does the golf cart battery work?

Deep Cycle Batteries:

Deep cycle batteries are the most available batteries in the market. Typical market applies another name such as marine, RV, storage, or golf cart batteries. These batteries construct with thicker plates. It allows the battery to accept subsequent recharging, deeply discharge, and having a constant distant rate.

  • It has no memory effect.
  • No benefit as a maintenance procedure for deeply discharging.
  • They are in two configurations: sealed and wet. Both do not require any liquid to fill and maintenance-free.
  • Wet cell batteries release hydrogen gas during charging. So, you have to maintain proper ventilation and frequently check the water level. They have high tolerance property for overcharging.
  • Absorbed glass mat(AGM) or true gel is used in sealed lead-acid batteries. Both AGM and gel construction are called valve regulated lead acid or VRLA batteries. The gel does not easily affect by extreme temperature and the internal discharge rate is lower. Sealed types are also known as maintenance-free, starve electrolyte, spill-proof, and dry cell batteries. The smaller battery has the computer uninterruptible power supply(UPS) boxes and house alarming system.
  • It has a lower peak charge voltage.
  • Bubbles in the gel do not dissipate easily and make the battery damage.
  • Deep cycle battery rated in amp-hours.

SLI Batteries:

  • Normally SLI means starting, lighting, and ignition.
  • It is designed for a quick charge from any source of charging or alternator.
  • For a short time, it releases a high burst of amps.
  • Do not function as a repeated deep charge.
  • Less than 3% battery capacity consumes during the starting sequence.
  • These batteries have relatively thin high plate count and rates in cold cranking amps(CCA) which are at 0 degrees F and cranking amps(CA) which is at 32 degrees F.

Lead Acid Batteries:

Golf cart usually uses a wet cell or flooded lead-acid batteries. It has been commercially used for 100 years without any big change. It composes of water, the electrolyte of sulphuric acid, and leads alloy plates. A lead-acid battery is full of cells and each cell needs about 2.2 volts. A normal 6 cell battery needs about 6.3 or 6.4 volts and a 12 cell battery needs about 12.7 volts. A higher-quality battery contains high voltage.

Each cell has two plates. The first one is lead and the second one is lead dioxide. Both plates are in contact with an electrolyte of sulphuric acid either a gel, a liquid, or absorbed in a mat. The lead plates react with sulphuric acid electrolytes and leave a free ion and PBSO4(lead sulfate). The lead dioxide also reacts with electrolytes of sulphuric acid and leaves hydrogen ion, lead sulfate (PBSO4), and oxygen ion on the plate.

Discharge of battery results in water dilution of acid lead sulfate on plates and allows the electron to leave from the battery.

More sulfation may bring problems later.

A hydrometer generally measures the specific gravity of electrolytes in flooded batteries. This will indicate the dilution or discharge level and strength or charge level.

Charging the battery is a reverse process than above and comprises a higher voltage than the existing voltage.

The battery of high voltages results in a faster charging rate. The lead-acid battery has a higher peak charge voltage than AGM or gel construction batteries. Because bubbles in the gel disrupt the true gel battery or AGM battery function.

High-Performance Batteries:

There is some high-performance battery such as the optima, odyssey and rock racing. These batteries contain high-quality premium materials. High burst amps appear for the first 5 seconds and it is a critical situation or critical properties during starting high compression engines. 

The technique of the construction achieves excellent results. The batteries can be recharged or discharged several times. For the dual purpose, it is hard to beat the starting and deep cycle batteries. It is capable of an emergency jump that will not destroy the cart easily.
